Is Your Business Using the Right Packaging Tape?

A practical guide to choosing between plastic pressure-sensitive tape and water-activated gum paper tape for busy packing lines.

Why tape choice matters

Carton sealing tape is often chosen by habit: what is familiar, available, or cheap per roll. For a packing operation, that can be too narrow a view.

The right tape affects packing speed, material usage, carton presentation, tamper evidence, and how confidently the carton reaches the receiver.

  • How many strips are needed to close a carton
  • How the seal performs through courier and warehouse handling
  • How much manual effort each packer repeats during a shift
  • How clean and professional the finished parcel looks
  • Whether the seal shows obvious evidence of interference

The two main tape routes

Plastic pressure-sensitive tape

Plastic pressure-sensitive tape uses a dry adhesive on a plastic film. It is usually applied with a hand-held tape gun and relies on pressure from the packer to bond to the carton surface.

It can suit low-risk cartons, lighter goods, temporary sealing, or operations where the current process is already stable and damage risk is low.

Water-activated gum paper tape

Water-activated tape, also called gum paper tape or gummed tape, is paper tape with an adhesive that activates when moistened. A manual or electric dispenser cuts the tape and applies water before the strip is placed on the carton seam.

Once applied, gum paper tape bonds into the carton fibres. That makes it useful where carton security, presentation, repeatable strip length, or packing consistency matters.

How to compare performance

The best tape choice depends on the carton, product risk, packing volume, and handling route. A useful comparison looks beyond the roll price and checks the full line behavior.

  • Strength: Does the carton need one clean strip or several reinforcing strips?
  • Reliability: Will the seal hold through heat, dust, humidity, cold, and repeated handling?
  • Tamper evidence: Would interference be visible before the carton reaches the customer?
  • Appearance: Does the final parcel look intentional, clean, and suitable for the brand?
  • Process fit: Can packers apply the tape consistently without slowing the bench?

How each tape is applied

With pressure-sensitive tape, the packer finds the tape edge, pulls the tape gun across the seam, applies pressure, cuts the strip, and often repeats the process for additional seams or reinforcement.

With water-activated tape, the dispenser produces a pre-cut moistened strip. The packer places the strip across the carton seam, presses it down, and lets the adhesive bond into the board.

That difference matters most when volumes rise. Repeatable strip length, bench ergonomics, and fewer sealing motions can become more important than the apparent price of the roll.

Look at total packaging cost

Plastic tape may look cheaper when compared roll-for-roll or metre-for-metre. That comparison can miss the total carton cost if the operation uses multiple strips, wastes tape while applying it, or loses time correcting weak seals.

Gum paper tape may carry a different consumable cost, but the operational question is whether it reduces strip count, improves consistency, supports branded cartons, or prevents avoidable repacking and damage conversations.

  • Tape used per carton
  • Time taken to close each carton
  • Rework from poor seals or messy application
  • Damage, returns, or complaint risk from opened cartons
  • Storage and purchasing complexity across tape types

Questions to ask before switching

  • What product weight and value are usually packed?
  • How many cartons are sealed per day or per shift?
  • How many tape strips are currently used per carton?
  • Do cartons travel through couriers, warehouses, branches, or customer-facing deliveries?
  • Is the current tape choice causing waste, slow packing, tamper concerns, or poor presentation?
  • Would a manual or electric dispenser fit the packing bench better?

If the answers point to volume, presentation, tamper evidence, or repeatable packing, gum paper tape is worth testing against the current plastic tape process.
